Ban on single-use plastics announced

Hot off the press, it has been announced by Government that single-use plastics will be banned in England from October 2023.
The ban will include single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks, and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers. From October 2023, consumers won’t be able to buy these products from any business – this includes retailers, takeaways, food vendors and the hospitality industry. The ban will not apply to plates, trays, and bowls that are used as packaging in shelf-ready pre-packaged food items, as these will be included in the new Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme (read our article on the EPR here).
