The latest SMMT new registrations data shows that car registrations rose by 7.2% in the year to February 2026 to 90,100 units.
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations increased by 2.8% to 21,840 units, accounting for 22% of the overall market in the year-to-date. However, BEV market share continues to fall short of the UK’s ZEV mandate target of 33% for 2026.
Sophie Linnell, Infrastructure and Energy Director at Walker Morris, said: “The latest SMMT registration data highlights the growing gap between the pace of battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption and the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, with the market still falling short of the 33% target for 2026. While demand for EVs is strong, uptake is being held back by a combination of high upfront costs, limited charging infrastructure, and ongoing grid capacity constraints.
“This is increasingly an infrastructure‑led challenge. Limited access to reliable charging, particularly for long‑distance travel, alongside delays in securing grid connections, continue to deter both consumers and fleet operators. However, the Government’s decision to boost EV chargepoint grants by more than 40% is a welcome step in tackling upfront costs and range anxiety, supported by Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund for businesses to adopt smarter energy solutions.
“However, uncertainty around future regulation and rising supply chain costs, particularly in relation to battery manufacturing, is adding further pressure for manufacturers. The phased introduction of EU battery sustainability rules over the next eight years is likely to increase compliance and supply chain costs. This may also drive a shift in manufacturing activity from Asia into Europe, with implications for pricing and investment decisions.”
She added: “If the Government is serious about closing the gap to the ZEV mandate, infrastructure must be treated as a strategic enabler, not an afterthought. Unlocking grid capacity, accelerating connections and supporting investment in charging networks will be key to giving manufacturers, fleets and consumers the certainty they need to make the switch.”
