Infrastructure & Energy team advise Iona Capital on investment in Carbon Capture Scotland Ltd

Walker Morris’ Infrastructure & Energy (I&E) team have advised Iona Capital (Iona) on their investment in Carbon Capture Scotland Ltd (CCSL). Iona, the UK market leader in sustainable investment funds, has acquired a stake in CCSL, a prominent player in the field of net-zero, carbon capture, and utilisation and storage of biogenic CO₂ in the UK.

In July 2023, Iona tasked CCSL with capturing and repurposing the green carbon dioxide emitted from Iona’s biomethane plants throughout the UK. Notably, this latest investment extends the collaborative efforts at Iona’s Crofthead biogas plant in Dumfries (southwest Scotland) Which is Scotland’s sole biomethane facility operating with carbon capture technology.

Iona’s investment in CCSL is supported by a comprehensive, long-term agreement, through which Iona commits to provide institutional funding to CCSL. This funding is intended to facilitate the development of infrastructure dedicated to the capture and processing of CO₂. The scope of this initiative spans various industries, with a particular emphasis on deploying CCSL’s technology in sectors such as anaerobic digestion and whisky distillation.

Tim Jackson-Smith led the I&E team at Walker Morris and was supported by William Oakes.

Alex Todhunter, Investment Director at Iona Capital said:

“Our investment in CCSL is backing a team who have consistently outpaced the rapidly evolving carbon capture industry.  Our partnership with CCSL provides a solid platform for investing into the full value chain of carbon capture, re-use, and sequestration, and will help drive CCSL’s growth.”

Tim Jackson-Smith, Partner at Walker Morris added:

“We’re delighted to have supported Iona in its latest investment. Carbon capture will play a vital role in the UK’s drive towards Net Zero and CCSL is at the forefront of this part of the market so it is great for the I&E team here at Walker Morris to be involved in a deal of this nature.”
