National Infrastructure Assessment 2023: Performance and priorities

The National Infrastructure Commission has published its latest report to prepare for the second National Infrastructure Assessment which is due to be published in 2023.

Key themes

The report identifies three strategic themes:

1. reaching net zero,
2. reducing environmental impacts and building resilience to climate change, and
3. helping level up communities across the UK.

Digital Technology

New digital technologies will have a role across all sectors in cutting costs, enhancing service quality and improving resilience.

Hydrogen, CCUS and transport

Priorities include identifying the infrastructure needed for hydrogen and carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) to decarbonise parts of the economy, improving recycling rates, and the long term investment needs for surface transport within and between cities and towns.

Energy from Waste

Future recycling targets and net zero ambitions for the UK’s waste sector will require significant additional infrastructure investment. The waste management industry stands ready to invest £10 billion in recycling over the next 10 years as part of our strategy to meet net zero across the sector’s activities by 2040. Supportive measures under the UK’s Resources & Waste Strategy measures, along with a business model for the deployment of CCUS to energy from waste facilities, will be crucial to underpin this investment.
