About the Disability Confident scheme

  1. What is Disability Confident?

Disability Confident is a government backed scheme designed to encourage employers to recruit, retain and develop disabled people. It is a voluntary scheme developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives.

  1. What is classified as a disability?

The Equality Act 2010 defines a disabled person as someone with a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. This definition encompasses a wide range of conditions, including physical impairments, mental health conditions, and learning difficulties.

  1. How will candidates be assessed under Disability Confident?

Candidates who indicate they wish to apply via Disability Confident will need to indicate so on their application. We can then offer an interview to Disability Confident candidates if they meet the essential criteria asked for at the application stage. It is important to note that, there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all Disability Confident candidates who meet the essential criteria for the job. In certain recruitment situations such as high-volume of applications, and high-peak times, we may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people.

Reasonable adjustments

We understand that everyone’s needs are different, and we are committed to providing a supportive and accessible working environment for all. As part of this commitment, we offer reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and during employment to ensure you as individuals can perform at your best. Whether you require additional support during the application stage or adjustments once employed, we encourage you to let us know, either through the application form or by contacting our People & Culture team. We will work with you to understand your needs and explore appropriate solutions.

What types of reasonable adjustments can we make?

A reasonable adjustment can be any measure that removes or reduces a barrier to recruitment or working, as long as it is “reasonable” they may be temporary, permanent or change over time. It’s important to understand that the adjustments we might be able to offer depend on each individual circumstances and the reason for the request.

Some of the below may be offered:

At the recruitment stage

  • Allowing more time, during any assessments we may ask
  • Offering an alternative if you are unable to use our online recruitment applications

  • Ensuring meetings and interviews have appropriate facilities and access
