As the Government prepares for the Autumn Budget and continues to advance its Clean Power 2030 ambitions, industry attention is focused on the investment and infrastructure needed to accelerate the UK’s energy transition. While much of the debate centres on bringing forward new renewable energy projects, there is also a significant opportunity to maximise the value of existing assets.
With many of the UK’s earliest renewable energy schemes approaching the end of their operational lifespan, greater clarity around grid connection reforms could play an important role in supporting repowering projects, unlocking investment and delivering additional clean energy capacity.
Sophie Linnell, Infrastructure & Energy Director at Walker Morris, said: “As the Government looks to accelerate clean energy investment and infrastructure delivery, there is a significant opportunity to support the repowering of existing renewable energy assets. Many renewable energy projects are approaching the point where major reinvestment decisions will be needed. Repowering can extend the life of established assets, increase generation capacity and bring additional clean power online more quickly than many new developments. However, developers need certainty around how ongoing grid connection reforms will affect existing connection rights.
“For many projects, those rights are among their most valuable assets and are critical to the commercial viability of future investment. NESO’s annual Gate 2 Methodology submission to Ofgem in June 2026 offers some encouragement by seeking to prioritise qualifying repowering projects in future Gate 2 tranches, but approval from Ofgem is still awaited on this submission to give developers confidence to invest.”
She added: “If ministers want to unlock private investment, strengthen energy security and accelerate progress towards Clean Power 2030, they should ensure that grid connection reforms support the reinvestment of existing renewable energy assets alongside the development of new projects. Providing that clarity could help unlock additional renewable capacity at a time when the UK needs it most.”
