The Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) comes into effect in just over a week on 1 April 2022.
PPT is levied on producers of plastic packaging, and importers of packaging or of products which are packaged in plastic (food or drink products, for example). Designed to encourage businesses to use recycled plastic, the Plastic Packaging Tax will be charged on plastic packaging which contains less than 30% recycled plastic material. The rate of tax is £200 per tonne of plastic packaging material.
If you manufacture or import 10 or more tonnes of plastic packaging within a 12 month period, you may need to register for PPT. Our detailed article setting out the issues that manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging need to consider and the practical steps that need to be taken can be found here.
We can help identify how the Plastic Packaging Tax may apply in your supply chains, and help review and amend your contracts to ensure that they are ready for the new regime. Please call your usual Walker Morris contact and we can make sure that your business is ready.
