Volunteers make a positive contribution at Leeds Law Society Education Week

Volunteers from Walker Morris recently took part in Leeds Law Society Education Week (28 November – 2 December). The initiative, now in its 10th year, aims to promote the opportunities and professional services roles available to young people in the Yorkshire region.
Leeds Law Society Education Week 2016 is in association with Ahead Partnership and focuses on inspiring pupils from inner city areas with the aim of raising their awareness of the world of work. It helps to raise awareness of the skills needed to join today’s fast-changing job market, especially within the legal world.
The Walker Morris Team joined 130 volunteers from a range of Leeds law firms to spend a day with a class of Year 6 (10-11 year olds) pupils helping to run a series of focused workshops. The volunteers worked in conjunction with the teachers and were able to offer first-hand experiences of working within a law firm and the variety of roles that exist.
The teacher-led activities were focused on the world of work and helped to broaden the children’s horizons about the choices and opportunities open to them, and helping them view work and employment as a positive option.
One of the Walker Morris volunteers commented:
“It has been an absolutely fantastic experience to have been a part of Leeds Law Society Education Week. Walker Morris is proud to have supported an initiative that aims to make a positive contribution to children from deprived areas within the region and encourages accessibility and diversity within the legal profession.
As well as volunteering at Leeds Law Society Education Week, we undertake apprenticeship schemes and mentoring projects, which help to support our commitment to making a career in law more accessible by focusing on students whose needs are the greatest.”
