Exploring the foundations of impactful legal leadership with Elke Edwards

For today’s General Counsel, technical legal expertise is only part of the job. Leading teams, influencing boards and managing competing business priorities are now just as important.

It’s why we created Illuminate. The programme brings senior in-house lawyers together to step away from day-to-day pressures, discuss the challenges shaping modern legal leadership and learn from experts both inside and outside the legal profession. Through candid boardroom-level conversations, Illuminate is designed to give General Counsel the insight, perspective and practical tools needed to thrive in their roles.

Those themes set the scene for our latest Illuminate dinner at Raffles London, where we welcomed guests from across the profession for an evening of discussion and reflection with leadership expert, keynote speaker and bestselling author, Elke Edwards.

Elke guided the attendees through an evening of thought-provoking discussion about the way senior professionals can approach their roles with greater clarity and impact.

The dinner marked the first event in the second series of our established Illuminate programme, which brings senior legal professionals together to discuss the capabilities required to thrive in modern leadership roles. Future events in the series will address leading under pressure and building a personal brand, continuing the programme’s focus on the capabilities required to succeed in increasingly influential leadership positions.

During the session, Elke presented her ethos for strong leadership, covering personal alignment, utilising your wisdom, not just your knowledge and taking responsibility for the way you operate within your own life.

Here are the key lessons Elke shared on the evening:

Aligning with your sense of self will boost your success

Effective leadership starts with self-awareness. Leaders who understand what energises them, what they value and what motivates them are often better equipped to make confident decisions and inspire those around them. Rather than defining themselves through job titles or responsibilities, successful leaders remain connected to who they really are.

Insight and perspective are invaluable

In a profession characterised by competing demands and rapid decision-making, clarity is the unspoken key. Elke encouraged attendees to create space for reflection, enabling them to cut through noise, gain perspective and focus on what matters most. While technical expertise remains essential, wisdom and judgement are often what distinguish outstanding leaders.

Controlling your reactions means controlling your mindset

No leader can control every challenge that lands on their desk. But they can control how they respond. Elke emphasised that resilient leaders acknowledge difficulties whilst maintaining ownership of their choices and actions. By focusing on what can be controlled rather than what cannot, leaders place themselves in a stronger position to navigate uncertainty and pressure.

We’re very thankful to Elke for sharing her insights and providing a timely reminder that exceptional leadership begins from within. As our Illuminate series continues, we’ll keep bringing together senior legal professionals to explore the challenges, opportunities and capabilities shaping the future of the General Counsel role.
