Charity Committee presents cheque for £8,715 at Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Singing for the Brain’ session
Representatives from the Walker Morris Charity Committee attended Alzheimer Society’s ‘Singing for the Brain’ session in Huddersfield last week to celebrate a successful year of fundraising for the charity. They presented the group with a cheque for £8,715.00.
The funds were raised by the employees of Walker Morris over the last 12 months as the Firm’s nominated ‘Charity of the Year’. The Walker Morris Charity Committee organised dress down days, cake sales, quiz nights, raffles and even a pumpkin carving competition. Other fundraising activities included a team of 15 intrepid volunteers taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise money and 30 runners participated in the Abbey Dash 10K race.
The money will be used to support vital local community projects such as Alzheimer’s Society’s fortnightly ‘Singing for the Brain’ service, which provides music therapy for people affected by dementia.
Tania Taylor, Services Manager from Alzheimer’s Society explained:
“Despite difficulties with short term memory, people living with dementia often remember the words to songs. It is remarkable to witness the music starting and suddenly the room is brought to life with a chorus of voices as people are able to recall the lyrics and the music. Even if an individual is not able to sing along, people enjoy listening to the music and the social interaction.
“We run sessions three times a month at Huddersfield Town Hall and the money raised by Walker Morris employees will provide vital funds to enable us to continue to support local community projects such as this.
“We are very grateful to have been Walker Morris’ chosen charity of the year and I’d like to thank all the employees who supported the fundraising activities throughout the last 12 months.”
Louise Power from Walker Morris’ Charity Committee said:
“As one of the biggest law firms in Yorkshire and one of the region’s largest employers, we recognise the importance of making a positive contribution to the community in which we live and work. Our Charity of the Year is nominated and chosen by our employees. Alzheimer’s Society supports many of our employees who have family members affected by dementia, providing them with services and support which help to make a big difference to the quality of life of both individuals and carers.
“It was a privilege to participate in one of their ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions to witness first hand the enjoyment and benefits these services provide. We’ve been delighted to be able to support the Charity to enable it to continue to make a difference to people’s lives.”
