Building work starts on The Cuttings development in Starbeck, Harrogate
Specialist advisors at Walker Morris have supported Harrogate Neighbours Housing Association and regeneration specialist, Keepmoat, on a £7.8million extra care development for older people in Harrogate.
Work is now underway on The Cuttings development, which received a £3.275m contribution from the Homes and Communities Agency and is being built on a former depot site gifted by North Yorkshire County Council.
The development will provide 55 one and two bedroom extra care apartments for affordable rent, as well as vital communal facilities to support the well-being of both residents living in the scheme and the wider community, including a restaurant, hair salon and multi-function rooms.
A ground-breaking ceremony took place to officially mark the first step in constructing the 55 homes on Wednesday 15th March.
The ceremony was led by Cllr Clare Wood, North Yorkshire County Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health Integration and Sue Cawthray, CEO of Harrogate Neighbours Housing Association. They were accompanied by Stephen Sadler from the Walker Morris Planning Team and representatives from Keepmoat and other partners.
Stephen Sadler, Head of the Planning Consultancy Team at Walker Morris commented:
“We’ve been delighted to provide specialist planning advice to our clients in support of the development of this excellent and much needed elderly care project in Harrogate with the support of the Borough Council, County Council, the HCA and other key stakeholders. There is an increasing need for high quality, extra care housing solutions in the country as a whole and this is a great example of how creative partnerships can address such a need.”
Paula Broadbent, Retirement Solutions Director at Keepmoat, said:
“We are excited to be starting works on this new development in Harrogate with our partners. This extra care scheme will help to drive forward our shared ambition of expanding the choice of high quality retirement housing to support people in later life.
“The Cuttings is the tenth extra care housing solution that Keepmoat has provided in North Yorkshire over the last 12 years, and Keepmoat and Harrogate Neighbours have worked in partnership to secure the delivery of this development, overcoming a number of challenges along the way.
“The scheme will not only provide sustainable housing with care for Harrogate Neighbours residents and people right across the borough, but it will also enable the development of additional specialist housing for older people on Wetherby Road once Harrogate Neighbours decant from their existing site.”
