Just A Minute: The Pensions Edition
To the casual observer it would appear that only one issue dominates the headlines and is of primary importance for our politicians: Brexit. However, in the last six months there have been any number of pensions-related developments and announcements. The Pensions Regulator may not have published its consultation on the new funding requirements, including the long-term funding target, but it has had a busy few months intervening in an increasing number of valuations as well as consulting on the future of pension scheme trusteeship and governance. GMP equalisation issues are keeping the DWP and HMRC busy. Wider pensions tax matters may be back on HMRC’s agenda as a result of senior NHS clinicians being caught by the tapered annual allowance.
The courts and the Pensions Ombudsman have also been kept busy on pensions issues. Despite the looming issue of Brexit, the Court of Justice of the European Union is considering the correct level of Pension Protection Fund compensation and whether or not it is possible to retrospectively cure equalisation issues. Closer to home, the long-running Box Clever case continues to keep the courts occupied.
It is, therefore, a good time to take stock of the latest pensions developments, but with our usual Walker Morris twist. We will present Just a minute: the Pensions Edition. Join us for a topical debate chaired by our own Nicholas Parsons substitute in which our “guests” (who make a plea for leniency in their attempts not to hesitate, repeat or deviate) educate (and amuse you) on topics such as:
- the latest on GMP equalisation – fun and games from our recent experience of scheme closure and equalisation
- the Regulator’s more interventionist approach to funding negotiations
- are more changes to the pensions tax regime coming down the track?
- will the Regulator’s latest trusteeship and governance consultations be game-changers?
- will the Pension Protection Fund be required to provide 100% compensation?
As always please come prepared for an interactive discussion (in our new offices) from which you will take away some practical hints and tips. To book your place please email email@example.com
