Mentoring

Walker Morris recognises that there are often excellent candidates for a career in the law who, for whatever reason, have not managed to secure a training contract as early as they might perhaps have liked. These candidates are often people who, through no fault of their own, have not necessarily had access to good advice about how to get a training contract, or who have had limited or no contact with the legal profession.

Currently in conjunction with Leeds, Huddersfield and York Universities and Leeds BPP Law School, the Scheme gives students access to a Walker Morris Trainee/Assistant Solicitor who they can contact personally for advice and assistance on researching firms, completing training contract applications, gaining work experience/vacation placements, improving interview skills, and so on.

The Scheme also gives students the invaluable opportunity to ask current practitioners what life in the legal profession is really like: how firms and work-types differ; what the truth is about working hours and different firms' cultures; what is expected of a trainee; what training/career progression is on offer.

Through the Mentoring Scheme, students can find out the whole truth – uncensored by graduate recruiters and marketing departments!

For Walker Morris' part, our Mentors gain great enjoyment and satisfaction from guiding students through the somewhat daunting application process, which the Mentors themselves have not long since been through.
